TLL 301 and 302 are courses designed to constitute a solid introduction to the Ottoman language and script. TLL 301 involves a comprehensive overview of the grammatical characteristics of Ottoman Turkish in conjuction with dwelling upon the technical aspects of Ottoman script. TLL 302, on the other hand, aims to enhance the reading skills of students who have already taken TLL 301 or an equivalent course. While concentrating mainly on printed texts TLL 302 also provides introductory knowledge on different styles of script as well initiating the students to a collection of document types selected from different historical periods. In sum, the two courses are geared to provide the essential tools and skills that would enable a researcher to assess and analyse primary Ottoman sources (such as those that are dealt with in the paleography courses offered in the History Graduate Program).
