MGMT 309 NGO Management and Impact: Organizational Design, Positioning, and Sustainable Futures Select Term:
Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are key actors in tackling humanitarian, social, development and business challenges around the world—challenges that are increasingly shaped by overlapping environmental, economic, and geopolitical crises. As the urgency to address sustainability-related issues intensifies, NGOs are expected not only to respond to immediate needs but also to develop long-term, systemic solutions that require new forms of strategic thinking and organizational capacity. This course, offered at Sabancı Business School, provides students with the tools, frameworks, and critical perspectives needed to understand and manage NGOs effectively. From organizational design, governance, and resource strategies to advocacy, partnerships, and future-oriented positioning, the course blends theory with practice. Students will explore global frameworks such as the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Result-Based Management (RBM), Project Cycle Management (PCM), and Monitoring, Evaluation, Accountability, and Learning (MEAL). In addition, the course engages with emerging trends at the intersection of philanthropy, business, and social impact, such as effective altruism, strategic giving, and impact investment. These trends have given rise to new fields of expertise focused on guiding capital—whether individual, institutional, or corporate—toward more meaningful and measurable forms of support for NGOs and social enterprises. The course aims to prepare students not only to lead NGOs but also to shape the future of how social value is funded, designed, and delivered. Through case studies, interactive exercises, and group projects, students will be equipped to design, lead, and transform NGOs in complex environments—whether as managers, consultants, funders, or policy advocates.
