MGMT 310 Humanitarian Management and Sustainability: Civil Society, Crisis, and the Economies of Aid Select Term:
Humanitarian Management and Sustainability examines humanitarian action not only as an ethical response to crisis but as a complex economic system shaped by resources, labor, markets, and power. The course analyzes the global humanitarian sector as a multi-billion-dollar industry, exploring funding architectures, supply chains, procurement practices, and labor hierarchies that structure aid delivery. It critically traces the shift from in-kind assistance to cash-based programming and market-oriented interventions, assessing their implications for dignity, local economies, and humanitarian effectiveness. Through a multidisciplinary lens, students examine how crises disrupt markets and livelihoods, while foregrounding the economic agency of refugees and displaced populations who actively navigate formal and informal economies beyond humanitarian assistance. Drawing on case studies from the MENA region, Turkey, Africa, and Europe, the course follows the full arc of crisis response, from emergency intervention through protracted displacement to recovery and reconstruction. Key debates include localization, inequality within the humanitarian workforce, profit and power in aid systems, and the political economy of humanitarian action. The course also explores humanitarian logistics, financial inclusion, and the growing role of digital and fintech tools in aid delivery. Students are equipped to critically assess humanitarian interventions as material, political, and economic practices, and to reflect on what a more just, sustainable, and locally grounded humanitarian system could look like.
