SEMINAR: Command Shaping for CNC Machine Tools

Guest: Seong-Wook Hong, Kumoh National Institute of Technology, South Korea

Title: Command Shaping for CNC Machine Tools (ME, MFG, MAT)

Date/Time: 4 November 2025  15:40

Location: FENS G029

Abstract: Command shaping is a powerful technique to suppress residual vibrations in flexible mechanical structures caused by high-speed positioning systems. Because CNC machine tools frequently utilize diverse, rapid positioning systems, command shaping offers a

direct, non-mechanical solution to significantly reduce detrimental vibrations in CNC machine tools. This presentation will first introduce the fundamental concept of command shaping, along with illustrating its effectiveness on XY stages. We will then transition to demonstrating several real-world applications of command shaping across two different types of CNC machine tools to achieve better performance.

Bio: Dr. Hong is a professor of mechanical engineering with a distinguished career spanning several decades. He began his academic journey at Seoul National University, earning his B.S. in 1983, followed by his M.S. from KAIST in 1985, and his Ph.D., also from KAIST, in 1989. After two years at Samsung Electro-Mechanics Co. Ltd., he joined Kumoh National Institute of Technology (KIT) in 1991, where he launched his teaching and research career. Throughout his professional life, Dr. Hong has dedicated his efforts to research and education in machine tools and manufacturing equipment. His expertise covers key technologies such as rotor dynamics, bearings, precision measurement, and vibration control. Dr. Hong served as President of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering (KSPE) in 2018 and as Chief of the Research Board at the National Research Foundation of Korea from 2019 to 2022. He currently holds a position as a Board Member of the Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies. For his significant contributions to education and engineering, Dr. Hong has received numerous awards, including a National Medal for Distinguished Education Service, the Hyeonsong Award for Distinguished Mechanical Engineers, the Grand Award of Precision Engineering, the Academic Award of the Korean Society for Precision Engineering, and the Contribution Award of the National Research Foundation of Korea.
