Precautions to Take During Extreme Heat

Dear Sabancı University Members,

With the arrival of the summer months, air temperatures continue to rise. It is of great importance to pay attention to some important points in order to protect our health. You can find the precautions you can take during this period below:

Clothing and Personal Care

Light and Light-Colored Clothing: Choose breathable, loose and light-colored clothing such as cotton and linen to keep your body cool. Try to avoid dark colors as they attract more sun.

• Hat and Sunglasses: Protect yourself from the harmful effects of the sun by wearing a wide-brimmed hat and UV-protective sunglasses when going outside.

• Sunscreen Usage: Apply high factor (SPF 30 and above) sunscreen at least 20 minutes before going out in the sun and renew it especially after sweating or every two hours.

Nutrition and Fluid Consumption

• Drink Plenty of Water: Drink plenty of water throughout the day to prevent your body from becoming dehydrated. Make it a habit to drink water at regular intervals, even if you do not feel thirsty.

• Prefer Light Meals: Instead of heavy, oily, and calorie-rich foods, consume light and watery foods, particularly vegetables and fruits. Refreshing foods such as salads, yogurt, and cacik are good options.

• Reduce Caffeine and Alcohol Consumption: Limit the consumption of these types of drinks as they can cause dehydration in the body.

Special Precautions for Those Working Outdoors

Extreme heat may pose an extra risk for our employees working in the open areas of our university. Please pay attention to the following precautions:

• Take Frequent Breaks: Take regular and cool breaks during working hours.

• Water Consumption: Carry enough water with you.

• Work Clothes: Make sure your work clothes are suitable for hot weather, and that they are breathable and protective.

General Recommendations

• Attention to Risk Groups: The elderly, those with chronic diseases, infants, and young children are more sensitive to extreme heat. Particular care should be taken to protect these people.

Complying with these precautions to protect yourself from the negative effects of extreme heat is vital for both your own health and the health of your loved ones.
