Abstract: High-resolution ADCs offer the precision required for emerging sensing, instrumentation, and imaging applications, but achieving such resolution at high conversion speeds remains challenging. This talk presents a series of works that pushed high-resolution ADCs from kS/s to MHz-class speeds while maintaining state-of-the-art energy efficiency, viewed through the lens of residue processing. We begin by reducing repeated sampling via residue preservation across loop filter updates, then eliminate repeated amplification through pre-stored residues, which naturally enables pipelined operation. The resulting reliance on accurate residue amplification motivates a dual-residue architecture that tolerates gain variation entirely. Together, these works contribute to extending the achievable speed range of high-resolution ADCs.

 

Bio: Xiyuan Tang is currently an assistant professor at Peking University. He received the B.Sc. degree (Hons.) from the School of Microelectronics, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Shanghai, China, in 2012, and the M.S. and Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from The University of Texas at Austin, Austin, TX, USA, in 2014 and 2019 respectively. From 2014 to 2017, he was a Design Engineer with Silicon Laboratories, Austin, TX, where he worked on the RF receiver design. He was a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Texas at Austin from 2019 to 2021. His research interests span data converters, edge AI chips, and brain-machine interface systems.

 

He is a Senior Member of IEEE. He serves on the Technical Program Committees of ISSCC, CICC, and A-SSCC, and as Chair of the AMS Subcommittee for ICTA. He is also an Associate Editor of IEEE Solid-State Circuits Letters and serves as Chair of the IEEE SSCS Young Professionals Committee.
