Title:  Organic and Bio-Organic Systems for Interfacing Biological Systems

Date/Time: Thursday 12, 2026, 11:00

Location: FENS G032

Abstract: In order to account for a sustainable future, the application of biodegradable and biocompatible systems for organic optoelectronics are needed. The use of cheap electronic devices on a large scale will introduce “consumable electronics” into the market of “consumer electronics”. Therefore environmentally friendly materials are important to use. This is a next great challenge to material science in organic electronics. New developments of bio-inspired and/or bio-origin, bio-compatible materials from our institute will be reported.

Such materials can also be used to interface the biological and biomedical research with the organic electronics devices. We will demonstrate that organic electronics devices are capable of stimulating biological responses using electrical and/or light induced impulse. Furthermore, the other direction of reading out biological events with electrical signals is also possible by using bio-functionalized organic diodes and transistors. This new field of bioelectronics is indeed shaping up worldwide and will soon enter the medical field by electronic implants. www.bioel.at

Bio: Prof. Niyazi Serdar Sarıçiftçi is a Professor of Physical Chemistry at Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz, where he leads the Institute for Physical Chemistry and the Linz Institute for Organic Solar Cells (LIOS), which he founded in 2000. He earned his PhD in physics from the University of Vienna and conducted research at the University of Stuttgart and the University of California, Santa Barbara, where he worked with Nobel Laureate Alan J. Heeger and co-discovered and developed polymer-based organic solar cells. His research focuses on organic semiconductors, organic and hybrid solar cells, and solar energy storage through CO₂ recycling. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Chemistry and SPIE, a member of several major scientific societies, and a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
