Title: Enabling Responsible AI with Humans (CS, EE, DS)
Date/Time: December 17, 2025, 13:40
Location: FENS G035
Abstract: In recent years, we have seen an increase in the number of applications where artificial intelligence plays a critical role in decision-making. While everyone is talking about the importance of responsibility, we still lack of computational methods that could successfully enable this. If we want to make AI responsible, it is essential to begin by equipping humans with the appropriate tools to oversee and control these technologies effectively. In this talk, I argue that we should provide usable tools for humans and also organizations. So I invite everyone to focus more on research on human-centered AI, which should prioritize the development of systems that support human decision-making while also enhancing human analytical capabilities. I will present a series of studies illustrating the potential of AI to augment human decision-making processes. These studies explore how AI can be structured not only to perform tasks but also to foster and enhance human critical thinking abilities, thereby contributing to the broader discourse on responsible AI.
Bio: Nadin Kokciyan is an Associate Professor (Reader) in Artificial Intelligence in the School of Informatics at the University of Edinburgh; and a Senior Research Affiliate at the Centre for Technomoral Futures, Edinburgh Futures Institute. Her research interests include human-centered AI, Privacy, Argument Mining, Responsible AI and AI Ethics. She currently leads the Human-Centered AI Lab (CHAI Lab) and is actively involved in initiatives that bridge technical AI development with ethical and societal considerations. Nadin is currently a Turing BridgeAI Associate Advisor at the Alan Turing Institute to provide specific guidance to organisations in Ethics of AI. Nadin earned her PhD in Computer Engineering from Boğaziçi University, where she developed an AI-based privacy management framework to assist humans in making decisions. She has held a postdoc position at King’s College London, where she worked on the development of an AI-based health management tool to assist users in managing their health by using argumentation techniques. Nadin regularly serves on the program committees for leading AI conferences such as AAMAS, IJCAI, AAAI and ECAI. She has dedicated over a decade of her career to the realm of academia. Her expertise is in using AI to develop decision-support tools for humans to make informed decisions. In 2021 and 2025, she served as a guest editor for special issues on ‘Sociotechnical Perspectives of AI Ethics and Accountability’ and ‘Humans Meets AI’ in IEEE Internet Computing.
