POLS 557 The Politics of Authoritarian Regimes:
3 Credits
This course aims to provide students with a better
understanding of the conceptual and operational differences
between authoritarian and democratic regimes. It examines
the similarities and differences among varieties of
authoritarian regimes, the factors that lead to democratic
backsliding and establishment of authoritarian rule, the
strategies that authoritarian power-holders use for regime
survival, state-society relations under authoritarian rule
the paths toward the end of authoritarian regimes
and re-democratization.
