Admission Requirements for the Graduate School of Social Sciences

Applications for graduate programs are evaluated by the Admissions Committee of the relevant program. Admission is finalized by the approval of the related Graduate School Board upon the recommendation of the Admissions Committee and announced to the applicant.

Deadlines for applications are announced in the Academic Calendar.

Applicants may be invited for written exams and/or interviews. All written exams and interviews are held in English. For Turkish and international applicants who are abroad and unable to attend written exams and/or interviews, will be interviewed through Skype.

Applications by international applicants studying abroad are valid only after the approval and recognition of the last graduated higher education institution and the course of study by the Turkish Higher Education Council. Verification will be done by the University.

Turkish candidates graduated from a higher institution abroad should submit a certificate of equivalence by the Turkish Higher Education Council.

IMPORTANT WARNING: All REQUIRED documents must be submitted during applications. Applications with incomplete documentation will not be taken into consideration. RECOMMENDED documents are not obligatory, but will be influential in the review process.

Application Documents and Requirements:

1. Online Application Form

Candidates can apply to more than one program via the online system. A separate application form should be filled out for each program to which a candidate wishes to apply.

2. Official Transcript: A sealed official transcript issued by the Student Affairs unit of the applicant's previous university should be submitted. This document should indicate the courses taken and grades received by the applicant

3. Two Letters of Recommendation: These should be either submitted online or posted in a sealed envelope. Sample letter

4. One Photograph: One photo is needed. If a photo has already been attached to the online application, this is not necessary.

5. Statement of Purpose: Applicants are expected to present a statement of purpose referring to the program they are applying to. Applications for Conflict Analysis and Resolutions, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies, European Studies, and Political Science will not be taken into consideration without the statement of purpose.

6. Writing Sample: Applicants are expected to present a writing sample like essay, article, thesis, etc. Applications for Conflict Analysis and Resolutions, Cultural Studies, Gender Studies and European Studies will not be taken into consideration without the writing sample.

7. Portfolio: There is no artistic examination for Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design programs. Applicants to this program are expected to submit portfolios in pdf, CD/DVD, printed material, slide or online format. Applications without a portfolio will not be taken into consideration.

8. Result for Graduate Program Entrance Exam: The applicant must submit one of the following exam’s result during application. Applications without a valid exam result will not be taken into consideration. Photocopies of the scores are accepted for application, but original copies should be submitted upon admission and enrollment.

After the test date, ALES / e-ALES scores are valid for 3 years; GRE score is valid for 5 years; GAT score is valid for 2 years.

Graduate Programs Entrance Exams are required for all graduate programs with the exception of Visual Arts and Visual Communication Design Non-Thesis MA. It’s not an application requirement for this specific program.

9. a) “Foreign Language Certificate” for PhD Programs: One of the following documents must be submitted during application; applications without these documents will not be taken into consideration.

Photocopies of the documents are accepted for application; however, originals will be requested upon registration in the case of admission.

SU graduates are required to submit language certificate as well.

ELAE exam is not substituted for language exam in PhD applications.

For PhD admissions, the applicant needs to achieve the minimum required points from a central foreign language exam recognized by the Turkish Council of Higher Education (YÖK) or the equivalent in an international language proficiency exam recognized by ÖSYM Board. The native language of the applicant is not considered a foreign language.

After the test date, TOEFL IBT scores are valid for 2 years; PTE Academic scores are valid for 2 years; CAE and CPE scores are valid for 3 years;  e-YDS, YDS, KPDS and ÜDS scores are valid for 5 years.

Applicants who provide a “Foreign Language Proficiency Certificate” in one of the languages listed above other than English are also required to fulfill the English proficiency criteria stated below at 9.b)

*According to the latest instruction letter for Foreign Language Exam Equivalencies issued by the Centre for Selection and Placement of Students in order for an exam to be accepted as equivalent, it must have taken place in a building owned by a state university.

Furthermore, according to an announcement on February 26th 2016, by the Centre for Selection and Placement of Students, certificates from exams which took place before the date of the announcement (February 26th, 2016) will be considered as meeting requirements. If the application was made before the date of the announcement (February 26th, 2016) and the exam took place within 30 days of the announcement, the certificate will also be considered as meeting requirements.

9. b) English Proficiency Exam Result Certificate: As the language of instruction at Sabancı University is English, the applicant is required to submit the score of one of the English proficiency assessment exams. Recognized exams, the minimum score required and period of validity are given in the table below. Photocopies of the documents mentioned below are accepted for application; however originals will be requested upon registration in the case of admission.

After the test date, TOEFL IBT scores are valid for 2 years; PTE Academic scores are valid for two years; CAE and CPE scores are valid for 3 years; e-YDS, YDS, KPDS and ÜDS scores are valid for 5 years.

Candidates are required to submit their English proficiency exam scores (TOEFL IBT, YÖKDİL, e-YDS, YDS, KPDS, ÜDS, PTE Academic, CAE or CPE) during the application. Applicants who are unable to provide a valid English Proficiency Exam score can only be admitted to graduate study upon obtaining a satisfactory grade in Sabancı University English Language Assessment Exam (ELAE) offered in early June. Those candidates who fail to attend or get a satisfactory grade in ELAE exam are obliged to attend and successfully complete English Language Preparation course(s) in order to enroll in a graduate program. Scholarships do not apply to the English Language Preparation courses.

Graduates of Sabancı University are exempt from submitting an English Proficiency Exam score provided that they apply within two years of their graduation.

Other Requirements

 - Candidates applying for the Master's Programs must hold an undergraduate degree or be registered in the last term of an undergraduate program. Those applying for the PhD programs may apply with a BA or MA degree.

- Candidates applying for the PhD Programs with a BA degree must hold a 3.00/4.00 GPA. The candidates graduated from institutions which apply a scale other than “X out of 4.00” system must provide a conversion table or an official letter of evidence from their institutions.

- Candidates applying for the PhD Programs with an MA degree must hold an “MA with Thesis” degree. Candidates whose diplomas or transcripts do not contain such information must provide an official letter of evidence from their institutions. 

- Holders of “Non-thesis MA degree” may apply to PhD programs only upon submission of an official document from their institutions, certifying that they have already been enrolled to the “Non-thesis” program before February 6th, 2013

- Candidates are required to have completed their previous studies by the time of enrollment at Sabancı University.

- In case of admission, the candidate is required to be personally present during registration. If the candidate cannot be present in person, the registration process should be completed by a proxy legally authorized through notary.

- International candidates, in case of their admission, must obtain a Student Visa from their home countries, prior to their arrival in Turkey, in order to be enrolled at Sabancı University. They should apply to the nearest Turkish Consulate or the Turkish Embassy. Tourist visas are not accepted.

Application Adress:

Applicants need to upload their documents on the online system. They are also required to submit their application packages either in person or post them by mail to the Department of Student Resources. Please note that print-out of the completed application form should also be added to the application package. The packages sent via mail must arrive at the department by the application deadline. Applications sent via e-mail are not accepted.

Warning! All the application documents become property of Sabancı University. It is suggested to keep the original reports of TOEFL, GRE, and other scores, and apply with the copies of those test scores. But please note that originals for all documents must be produced at the time of registration to Sabancı University
