The objective of this course is to introduce the basics of space technology, focused especially on principles of satellite/payload design, propulsion, control, power, thermal issues. Space environment, payload design with radiation hardness will be discussed. The course also includes a general overview of applications that are available with space science like GPS, Earth Observing, and Astronomy.

CONTENT
OBJECTIVE
The objective of the course is to teach fundamentals of spacecraft design and subsystems, and have students come up with a cubesat idea and realize the idea up to the Preliminary Design Review level.
LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Identify possible applications of space systems
- Differentiate between top-level requirements and functional requirements of a spacecraft and identify constraints related to the entire design
- List the subsystems of a spacecraft and describe their main functions.
- Propose a trade-off scenario between different subsystems of a spacecraft.
- Identify satellite orbits and differentiate the impact of the orbit on satellite functions and operations.
- Distinguish between the space environment and the Earth environment to analyze the impact of the space environment on the satellite design.
- Work as a group to analyze the assigned project part/subsystem and provide steps to complete the assignment.
- Synthesize information from other groups to incorporate own project assignment in an interdisciplinary environment.
- Provide findings in meetings and in a project management software
