This course will examine the main economic policy regimes and the underlying social, political and institutional dynamics in recent Turkish history in the context of a political-economic theoretical framework. The topics covered will include: positive political theory; political groups, interest groups and political influence; the political economy of elections; populism and redistributive politics; the statist era; the import substitution era; Turkey during globalization; structural reforms and political, social and institutional constraints.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
- By the end of this course a student should be able to: a) Use the main analytical approaches to the study of institutions and political economy b) Develop notions of social welfare with which to evaluate economic and social policy c) Discuss the evolution of main policy making regimes in Turkey d) define political and institutional factors that affect policy in Turkey in areas such as international trade and finance, public finance, privatization and social security, as well as the role of economics in Turkish voting behavior e) Develop individual skills in reading academic articles critically and write response papers about them f) Conduct theoretical or empirical research on a major issue area in political economy of Turkey and write a research paper based on such research.
