CONTENT

Beginning with a baseline survey of conditions prevailing shortly before the siege and eventual capture of Constantinople by Mehmed II in 1453, HIST 571, whether taken independently or as a sequel to HIST 570, is designed to take students from Ottoman Istanbul's initial re-building and repopulation, through its 16th century efflorescence as the capital of a new and resurgent empire, as well as through the manifold transformations of the 17th and 18th centuries, into the Tanzimat onset of modernity. Historical backgrounding lectures on these and other key phases or developments will be complemented with other, on site lectures in the course of study trips to leading Ottoman locations and monuments....

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1. discuss the Transition Debate 2. explain the functional and symbolic meanings of the Ottoman socio-religious complexes. 3. investigate various uses of urban space, gardens and suburbia 4. study Ottoman urban rituals 5. analyze the provisioning the Imperial Capital 6.describe the different worlds of men and women 7. develop an understanding of the Public Life / Public Sphere Debate 8. analyze the dynamics of social unrest 9. investigate the underworld, the poor and the outcast 10. discuss impacts of Modernization 11. contextualize Istanbul and the ?World Around It: 12. develop visual literacy 13. develop independent study skills 14. evaluate material to produce, to a deadline, a coherent and cogent argument, developed through the mode of assessment

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES


1. Develop and deepen the current and advanced knowledge in the field with original thought and/or research and come up with innovative definitions based on Master's degree qualifications 5
