CONTENT

This course focuses on helping students develop the language and skills required for effective communication at the Basic level. The instructional approach is directed towards the development of everyday communication. Students also develop basic knowledge in grammar, lexis, and phonology. By the end of this level, students will be able to talk about their preferences, daily routines and schedules, work life, spare time activities, sports, shopping, social activities, celebrations and personal relationships, using the grammar rules and vocabulary they have learned. They will also be able to make comparisons, describe their moods, and express feelings and opinions as well as their experiences and future plans, using simple syntactic structures.

OBJECTIVE

The course Basic German I focuses on basic linguistic and communicative structures of the German language. Students will be introduced to various aspects of German culture and learn to communicate in simple everyday situations and personal interaction. The module will adopt an integrated approach to language learning and will emphasize equally all four skills of reading, writing, listening and speaking as well as the acquisition of grammar structures and vocabulary. Audio and video materials will also be used to supplement the textbook and to provide students with a better insight into Germany, her culture and the life of her people.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Upon completion of the course, successful students will: 1. Converse in a culturally appropriate manner about everyday topics such as greetings and personal description within the limits of vocabulary and structures appropriate to beginning German. 2. Read and demonstrate comprehension of a short paragraph in German about other people, places or everyday topics. 3. Write a 5-10 sentence paragraph in German about themselves and everyday topics.
