CONTENT

This course intends to convey the basic knowledge of seeing. Various methods for the organization of visual elements are utilised in the projects produced by students throughout the semester. These projects will be jointly discussed during the studio critiques to develop necessary skills in reading and analysing visual statements.

OBJECTIVE

This course will start with some information and exercises about seeing and creating images. It will move on to the basic visual elements and their various characteristics. It will move onto how we see, and the principles of Gestalt in terms of visual perception in design. There will be numerous basic design exercises to teach students how to consciously assemble various visual elements to achieve particular effects and to efficiently communicate in visual language. Students will be learning to use visual principals and strategies such as gestalt, emphasis, balance, grouping, continuity, rhythm, contrast and harmony.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Describe basic visual elements and their particular characteristics.
  • Comprehend the general structure and composition, recognize the basic pattern areas, understand Gestalt principles and the perception factors making up a complex image.
  • Sketch, draw, paint, cut, paste, analyze, sharpen and complete the creative process of two-dimensional designs without assistance on paper.
  • Develop an understanding of materials, in terms of their potentials as well as their shortcomings.
  • Develop an understanding of creative design process with all of its various steps from planning to final execution: Develop the ability to absorb large quantities of visual information, process, prioritize, eliminate, decide and finalize the visual statement incorporating the intended meaning.
  • Pay close attention to details, and articulately analyze and critique their own, as well as other students' works.
