CONTENT

History of biotechnology; basic principles of recombinant DNA technology; large scale cultivation of microorganisms and commercial exploitation of microorganisms; bioremediation; principles and applications of animal cell culture; monoclonal antibodies; transgenic animals; human genome project and gene therapy; principles and applications of plant cell and tissue culture; plant genetic engineering and its potential in agricultural production.

LEARNING OUTCOME

Have general information about biotechnology in the 21st century.
Learn about genes and genomes of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms
Know the history of genetic manipulation and recombinant DNA technology
Define proteins as products and how they are produced through microbial biotechnology
Know the principles of plant biotechnology and genetically modified plants
Learn about the applications of animal biotechnology
Know the importance of aquatic biotechnology in meeting the protein equirements of the growing population
Identify the tehniques used in DNA fingerprinting and forensic analysis
Have clear knowledge on the applications of medical biotechnology
Know different bioremediation methods
Have general information on biodiversity
Know importance of regulatory oversight in biotechnology
Being able to discuss the ethical aspects of biotechnology
