CONTENT
OBJECTIVE
*Introduce you fundamental principles of polymer chemistry
*Familiarize you with the polymerization reactions, kinetics and thermodynamics.
*Utilization of kinetic and thermodynamic parameters for the synthesis of different types of polymer structures, and the process conditions will be evaluated.
*A basic understanding of the reaction parameters for controlling polymerization rates, molecular weights, structural features and mechanical properties will be given.
*A working knowledge of polymer chemistry and physics will be provided by laboratory experiments
LEARNING OUTCOME
Upon successful completion of Polymer Chemistry (MAT 302), students are expected to be able to:
Describe the basic properties of polymers,
Classify the polymers in terms of repeating unit and use, and give examples of each class,
Discuss the effects of molecular weight, molecular structure and thermal transitions on physical/chemical/mechanical/thermal properties and end-uses of polymers,
Describe and compare the fundamental polymer synthesis and characterization techniques,
Identify the reaction parameters for controlling polymerization rates, molecular weights, structural features and mechanical properties of polymers,
Perform radical chain-growth polymerization, step-growth polymerization and copolymerization experiments and characterize the synthesized polymers.
