Modernism and postmodernism have been two of the dominant trends of the 20th century in fields ranging from literature to visual culture and beyond. This course will explore some of the debates around modernism and postmodernism through theoretical texts as well as through works which have influenced or have been influenced by the course of these ideas.


At the end of the course, students should be able to:
1. Demonstrate an understanding of the key concepts and the range of theoretical positions and debates on the nature of modernism and postmodernism,
2. Identify the defining characteristics of modernism and postmodernism in literature and the visual arts,
3. Pose a research question relevant to the issues of modernism and postmodernism, and analyze a specific literary or visual text from the viewpoint of that question.
