CONTENT

This course intends to convey the basic knowledge of seeing. Various methods for the organization of visual elements are utilised in the projects produced by students throughout the semester. These projects will be jointly discussed during the studio critiques to develop necessary skills in reading and analysing visual statements.

OBJECTIVE

This course will start with some information and exercises about seeing and creating images. It will move on to the basic visual elements and their various characteristics. How do we see? Principles of Gestalt in terms of visual perception in design. Closure/proximity/grouping/continuity.Basic design exercises to consciously assemble various visual elements to achieve the particular effect we desire -Strategies of unification- Contrast and Harmony

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • By the end of the course, students will be able to: a) describe basic visual elements and their particular characteristics, b) recognize basic pattern areas of a complex image, Gestalt principles and the perception factors involved. c) sketch, draw, paint, cut, paste, analyze, sharpen and complete the creative process of two-dimensional designs without assistance on paper; d)comprehend composition, alignment, planning , effective prioritizing and an understanding of materials, in terms of their potentials as well as their shortcomings. e) develop an understanding of creative design process with all of its various steps f) enhance their understanding of visual language especially in comparison to other works of visual art and design. g) develop the ability to absorb large quantities of visual information, process, prioritize, eliminate, decide and finalize the visual statement incorporating the intended meaning. Individual and key skills: Students will be able to: h) pay close attention to details, and articulately analyze and critique theirs as well as other students works.
