CONTENT

This course is intended to introduce students to a series of major works of art and architecture from the Middle East, India, and East Asia. Its aim is to offer an idea of the ways human beings have brought their values to life across a wide area of the globe. Each week's lecture will focus on a different work, situating it in its artistic, cultural and historical contexts and suggesting the perspective(s) it offers on universal human concerns such as the relation of man to God and the natural world, ethical values, political power, and the role of art and artists in bringing all these to life. In addition to the existing pre-requisite " to have completed 23 credits" for this course , a new condition will be added as "to complete SPS 101 and SPS 102 courses at least with D grade" as of the Fall semester of 2015-2016 Academic Year. Students who failed from SPS 101 and SPS 102 courses, do not have right to take this course.

OBJECTIVE

To teach students about some major works of Eastern art in order to broaden their horizons and make them appreciate (or even question) their own cultural background and artistic tastes.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • At the end of the course the learner is expected to have gained a broad understanding of some major masterpieces of Asian and Islamic art, including the cultural and ideological backgrounds that inform them, as well as an increased awareness of his or her own artistic values and preferences.
