CONTENT

This subject addresses the phenomenon of globalization in connection with a variety of issues that have direct and/or indirect relevance for business and managerial practices. Topics to be covered include: The globalization debate in terms of conceptualization, causal dynamics, socio-economic consequences, and implications for macroeconomic stability, state power and governance. Transnational corporations, globalization versus localization of emerging consumption patterns, information technologies, global financial markets, political and economic consequences of globalization, and accords such as European Union, GATT, and NAFTA will be discussed.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to: 1. Examine the formation, structure and interactions of global context since the 15th century with specific emphasis on the last two centuries. 2. Use major social theory frameworks and international political economy perspectives in making sense of change and transformation in the structures of modernity in connection with the global context. 3. Discuss connections between business corporations and states and how the interaction between these two plays a decisive role in the making of the local, national and global structures and relations. 4. Assess the importance of business competition in political rivalries among states and focus on international relations as the realm of ideological and political contest. 5. Explain the role of money and finance in international relations and examine major economic crises and transformations in the international financial system as turning points in the structures of global context. 6. Interpret the current economic and political relations on the global scale in terms of economic flows in the world economy. 7. Attempt to distinguish the current episode of global context from the earlier ones in terms of structural differences as well as the configurations of powerful actors.
