CONTENT

Fundamental financial concepts from the perspective of financial managers/entrepreneurs are examined and practical applications within local and global contexts are discussed. Topics include accounting information for decision making/performance evaluation, financial statement & ratio analyses, financial planning, time value of money, capital budgeting, risk-return relationship, capital structure, valuation of financial securities & firms, risk management, and derivatives.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

  • Upon successful completion of the course, the student should be able to: 1. Calculate present and future values of streams of cash flows as well as rates of return 2. Determine the market value of a bond or its yield 3. Describe dividend discount models used for stock valuation 4. Calculate Net Present Value or Internal Rate of Return of an investment 5. Describe identification of cash flows attributable to a proposed project 6. Describe opportunity cost of capital and its relation to financial risk; 7. Distinguish between unique risk and market risk 8. Interpret market risk, or beta, of a security and use CAPM to estimate opportunity cost of capital 9. Estimate a firm?s capital structure and Weighted Average Cost of Capital, understand the use WACC 10. Identify the need for working capital, assess working capital needs of a firm
