CONTENT

Overview of metal-oxide semiconductor (MOS) device technologies for large scale integrated (LSI) circuits; inverter circuits, static and transient operation; complementary metal-oxide semiconductor (CMOS) logic implementation, full-custom gate design, mask layout fundamentals; static and dynamic logic circuits; sequential logic circuit designs; non-volatile semiconductor memory structures; static and dynamic random access memory design principles.

OBJECTIVE

To develop the engineering skills to analyze and design CMOS Digital ICs.

To introduce basic CMOS process technology to understand the structure, operational principles and circuit parameters of transistors used in digital design.

To provide each student with the opportunity for completing a set of design projects that lead to the development of a small digital standard cell library.

LEARNING OUTCOME

Design, analyze and simulate combinational and sequential CMOS circuits.
Explain CMOS process technology for digital integrated circuits.
Use standard electronics design automation software for the transistor level design of CMOS digital IC building blocks and standard cells.
Describe parameters that are used to assess the quality of digital circuits and use software to calculate these.
Describe parameters that affect the speed, throughput and power consumption of digital circuits.

Analyze and solve interfacing problems between logic blocks.
Describe the technology used in the construction of digital memory, and assess the quality of various memory types.
