Researchers' Residence Permit Applications

Residence permit application must be submitted before the expiration date of a visa (regular or electronic), passport or other entry document. Each applicant must be aware of the expiration date of their visas or the amount of time allowed in Turkey with other documents.

Applicants’ passports must be valid at least 60 days beyond the requested ending date of residence permit (i.e. if an applicant wants to have a residence permit which expires on June 30th, his/ her passport must be valid until August 29th). 

The Short-term Residence Permit gives you the right to stay in Turkey during your research period. . 

You must complete the following documents right after your arrival in Turkey so that you can submit your hard copy application file to the Immigration Office immediately.

Important Notes:

Residence applications made from abroad are invalid. Researchers wishing to apply for the residence permit or to extend the duration of the residence permit must be in Turkey. 

  • You cannot get a foreigner identification number without applying for a residence permit. 
  • You cannot get a residence permit with your National ID card. 
  • You have to enter Turkey with your passport. 
  • You cannot leave Turkey until your residence application is approved. 
  • Your passport must be valid at least 60 days beyond the requested ending date of residence permit (i.e. if you want to have a residence permit which expires on June 30th, your passport must be valid until August 29th). Make sure your passport is valid for 6 months minimum.

If you are about to graduate from Sabancı University and will soon start working at Sabancı University as a post-doctoral researcher, take a look at the warnings below:

  1. As of your graduation date, your residence will be terminated by the Immigration Administration. If you are not going to start as a post-doctoral researcher right after graduation (for example, if you graduate in June and start as a post-doctoral researcher in September), you must apply for a short-term residency for this gap in between. Otherwise, you may have to pay fines or be deported because of days you have been without a residence.
  2. If you are going to work as a post-doctoral researcher immediately after graduation, click on the residence transfer application link given below under the online application title.

APPLICATIONS STEPS: 1. GET YOUR TAX NUMBER 

The tax number is necessary for important payments and processes, such as the residence permit fee, opening a bank account, or registering your mobile phones. Once you receive your residence permit card, you will have your foreign ID number on it. You can use your foreign ID number for all legal issues; however, until you receive it, the tax number is the ID number you will be using. Thus, you have start with obtaining a tax number upon your arrival. 

There are two ways to acquire a tax number: 

Online Application: Visit the official web page of Tax Office at https://ivd.gib.gov.tr Click on the Application for Non-Citizen’s Potential Tax Number button on the bottom of the page. The application form has English explanations, and it requires you to upload your passport ID scan. The system will give you a Tax ID number once you submit the form. Please enable cookies and pop-ups on your browser since your Tax ID number will be given to you as an official letter in a PDF format. If you cannot obtain an online tax number, you must visit the nearest tax office in person. 

In-person application: You need to visit a Tax office with your original passport and its copy.

Note: If you already have a tax number or Foreign ID Number you do not have to get a Tax Number again. 

2. MAKE ONLINE APPLICATION

2. SUBMIT YOUR DOCUMENTS 

Once your online application is complete, you should print it out, sign the signature part on the first page, and submit it along with all your documents to the Migration Office on your appointment date. 

Required Documents for the Short-Term Residence Permit Application

  1. 4 biometric pictures (biometric self-service photo booth is available on campus (University Center, ground floor)
  2. The printout of the residence application document. Do not forget to sign the signature section on the application document.
  3. The printout of your Passport ID page
  4. The printout of your Passport Last Entry Stamp Page of Turkey
  5. Health Insurance Policy Document If you are insured by the university, please contact your unit or HR and request your health insurance policy document. If you are not insured by the university, The IRO (International Relations Office) can suggest you companies or you can find a well-known company to get a health insurance, such as AON, Allianz, Aksigorta etc... Just make sure that it is an appropriate health insurance for the residence permit as requested. Regarding this matter please contact irolegal@sabanciuniv.edu
  6. Address document or copy of a rental agrement (if you are not staying on campus)
  7. The official documents showing the subject and the duration (start and finish date) of your research at Sabancı University. You must obtain this document from your advisor, faculty member, unit (for example, Faculty of Science, human resources or PRESENTATION). Click here to download the sample document draft.
     

3. FOLLOW UP YOUR APPLICATION

  • Once the Immigration Office goes over your files and approves your application file, the confirmation SMS / email for your application approval will be sent to you. After receiving the message, your card will be printed and posted by the Immigration Office. Your card is delivered to your contact address by the official carrier, PTT. You must be ready at the address you provided in the application form to receive the card. The postman will not hand over the residence card to anyone other than you. If the postman cannot find you at your address, the PTT will return your card to the Immigration Directorate. Please be aware that tracking your residence permit card during the posting process is fully your responsibility. To receive your card, make sure you provide the correct address on the application form. 
  • Be aware that the Immigration Administration might ask for some extra documents depending on your situation. 
  • You cannot leave Turkey without obtaining your residence permit card. If you do so, you will receive a penalty depending on your case and your application will be cancelled by the Immigration Office. 
  • If your study continue past the expiration date of your card, then you have to extend your residence permit.

4. CHECK APPLICATION RESULT & RECEIVE YOUR CARD 

ATTENTION:

You can see the result on this page only after the evaluation of the immigration authority. The evaluation of the immigration administration takes between 1 week and 1 month, depending on the file. Therefore, start checking the page from the beginning of the next month from the month you submit your application to us. For example, if you submitted your application to us in June, you need to wait unitl the first week of July at the earliest to see the result. 

You can reach the result of your application "positive or negative" by clicking this link. Login to the system by entering your mobile number or your e-mail address and passport number that you used in the application along with your application number. If your application has been evaluated positively or negatively, this information will appear on the screen. If your application is approved, click on the "post tracking" link on the same page to find out the printing status of your card. If your card has not been printed yet, the barcode number will give an error. If it is printed, you can follow the delivery stage of your card according to the barcode number.
