Researchers' Residence Permit Applications

Residence permit application must be submitted before the expiration date of a visa (regular or electronic), passport or other entry document. Each applicant must be aware of the expiration date of their visas or the amount of time allowed in Turkey with other documents.

Applicants’ passports must be valid at least 60 days beyond the requested ending date of residence permit (i.e. if an applicant wants to have a residence permit which expires on June 30th, his/ her passport must be valid until August 29th).

The Short-term Residence Permit gives you the right to stay in Turkey during your research period. We will guide you through the process and submit your hard copy application file on your behalf to Immigration Office Istanbul. However, it is your responsibility to prepare all the documents listed below and submit them to us on time!

You must complete the following documents right after your arrival in Turkey so that we can submit your hard copy application file to the Immigration Office immediately. If you do not provide all the documents on time, then you will have to submit them to the Immigration Office yourself, and your card will arrive late.

Important Notes:

  • Residence applications made from abroad are invalid. Researchers wishing to apply for the residence permit or to extend the duration of the residence permit must be in Turkey.
  • You cannot get a foreigner identification number without applying for a residence permit.
  • You cannot leave Turkey until your residence application is approved.
  • Your passport must be valid at least 60 days beyond the requested ending date of residence permit (i.e. if you want to have a residence permit which expires on June 30th, your passport must be valid until August 29th). Make sure your passport is valid for 6 months minimum.

If you are about to graduate from Sabancı University and will soon start working at Sabancı University as a post-doctoral researcher, take a look at the warnings below:

If you are not going to start as a post-doctoral researcher right after graduation (for example, if you graduate in June and start as a post-doctoral researcher in September), you must apply for a short-term residency for this gap in between. Otherwise, you may have to pay fines or be deported because of days you have been without a residence.
