HIST 591 Sources and Methods for Early Republican History, 1920-1938
This is one of a series of term-courses reviewing sources relevant for the study of Ottoman and Turkish history in different periods, as well as methods that have been developed and employed by historians on the basis of different types of sources. Specifically for the first two or three decades of the Turkish Republic, HIST 591 comprises a comparative study of the ''one party'' period and political system using primary sources and relating them to their specific historical and political contexts. Starting with the political situation emerging out of World War I, as well as the various alignments and polarizations evolving during the years of the War of Independence, the impact of this crucial, traumatic, formative ''moment'' will be pursued from the founding of the Republic to the end of the early Republican era. Included will be a comprehensive review of all political, cultural, economic and foreign policy developments and orientations, with specific focus on the political organizations of the period.
