The minor program in Art Theory and Criticism
is designed to provide students with an
understanding of the Visual Arts within a historical,
social, and cultural framework through an engagement with
history, theory, research projects, and study visits.
Focused primarily on the modern and contemporary era,
it aims to lay the grounds for future engagement in the arts
at various levels, from artist, critic, and curator to
learned audience. Merging an interdisciplinary
array of knowledge from Art History, Visual Culture,
Philosophy, Psychology, and Cultural and Gender Studies,
, students are given the critical tools to broaden their
command and appreciation of a vast circulation of cultural
practice disseminated through an arts industry that includes
museums, exhibition venues, biennials, print publishing,
and digital distribution. Hence the program not only serves
as a complement to the Visual Arts and Visual Communication
Design Undergraduate Program but is also
open to students coming from all areas of knowledge
interested in becoming confident to engage with artistic
innovation.
