Review of the development of history writing in Ottoman society; the scope, meaning and uses of history; official and non-official sehnames, chronicles, histories. Uses of Ottoman historical writing for modern scholarship. Readings in major historians of the 16th and 17th centuries (Kemal Pasazade, Celalzade, Mustafa Ali, Naima) in printed and manuscript texts. Requirements : a major research paper of around 30 pages. Counts towards fulfilling the seminar requirement in History while also serving as a course in advanced paleography. Prerequisite : An adequate command of Ottoman Turkish, through TLL 501-502 or the equivalent, and subject to the instructor's approval.


The course aims at familiarizing the graduate student with Ottoman chronicles and histories.

Learning Outcome

Upon successful completion of this course, students should be able to:
- Read the works of Ottoman historians and chroniclers between the late fourteenth and mid-seventeenth centuries critically
- Establish intertextuality
- Evaluate intertextuality as sources of Ottoman history

1 Establish a strong theoretical background in several of a broad range of subjects related to the discipline, such as manufacturing processes, service systems design and operation, production planning and control, modeling and optimization, stochastics, statistics.
2 Develop novel modeling and / or analytical solution strategies for problems in integrated production and service systems involving human capital, materials, information, equipment, and energy, also using an interdisciplinary approach whenever appropriate.
3 Implement solution strategies on a computer platform for decision-support purposes by employing effective computational and experimental tools.
4 Acquire skills to independently explore and tackle problems related to the discipline that were not encountered previously. Develop appropriate modeling, solution, implementation strategies, and assess the quality of the outcome.
