English historian;
generally recognized as one of the greatest and most famous
historians of the 20th century; now in his late 80s, one of the
last survivors of the school of English Marxist historians that
has been very influential in historical studies from the early
1950s onwards; one of the original founders, and the first
editorial board chairman, of Past and Present, arguably
one of the most influential scholarly journals of the
Anglo-American world. Best known for his great tetralogy of 19th
and 20th century history : The Age of Revolution, The
Age of Capital, The Age of Empire, and Age of
Extremes, as well as for a variety of other works, including
Nations and Nationalisms since 1783, and his
autobiography titled Interesting Times (in which he also
undertakes a comprehensive critique of Communism in the 20th
century).
