Outspoken activist for democracy, human rights and peace in the
Palestinian cause.
An articulate and eloquent speaker, and an inspirational figure
in a world dominated by men with guns. With a Ph.D. in Medieval
Literature (from the US), she became professor and chair of the
Department of English at Bir Zeit University, then the Dean of
the Faculty of Arts. In 1991, she was appointed as the Official
Spokesperson of the Palestinian Delegation to the Middle East
Process. In 1998, she resigned from her position as the
Palestinian Minister of Higher Education in protest against
political corruption and Arafat’s abuse of power. She is the
founder and current head of MIFTAH - the Palestinian Initiative
for Dialogue and Democracy. |
