MAT 408 Introduction to Ceramics |
3 Credits |
The course is a series of introductory level lectures
describing the types of ceramic materials ranging from oxide
carbides. The crystalline structure of common ceramics and
the amorphous nature of glass will be introduced. Surfaces,
interfaces, grain boundaries and other structural
imperfections in ceramics will be discussed Microstructural
development will be treated in the light of ceramic phase
diagrams, phase transformations, and chemical reactions with
and between solids, grain growth, sintering and
vitrification.Thermal, optical, mechanical, electrical, and
magnetic properties of different ceramics will be discussed.
