This course examines various forms of 19th and
20th century literature that fall outside the
rubric of the literary canon. It aims to provide an
understanding of what constitutes popular literature
and its place in contemporary culture. It focuses on one
or more popular genres such as
adventure fiction, children's literature, horror, detective
fiction, romance, and science fiction, offering
an introduction to such topics as literary value,
readership, generic conventions, narrative
techniques, and adaptation.
